Seafood Map: Which countries and regions do China's imported seafood mainly come from

In the first half of 2024, the export value of seafood from some countries to China increased, the export value of seafood from Indonesia, Vietnam, Canada, and New Zealand to China increased.

China's imported seafood mainly comes from countries and regions:

South America:

• Ecuador: It is an important import source country for Chinese seafood and products. The country's South American white shrimp has high production and excellent quality, and with its price advantage and good taste, it occupies a large market share in China. In 2022, Ecuador exported approximately 590,000 tons of shrimp to China, with an export value of up to 3.58 billion US dollars, an increase of 56%. Of the 987,601 tons of shrimp imported by China in 2023, 697,357 tons were from Ecuador, accounting for 71%.

• Chile: mainly exports frozen salmon and other seafood products from aquaculture to China. The salmon raised by it has delicious meat and certain competitiveness in the Chinese market. It will rank ninth among China's seafood import suppliers in 2023.

North America:

• Canada: has abundant fishery resources and exports a variety of seafood such as lobster, snow crab, salmon, etc. to China. Its wild seafood is recognized by Chinese consumers for its high quality and is one of the main sources of imported wild seafood in China.

• USA: It is also an important supplier of seafood to China, with export varieties including lobster, king crab, cod, etc. The United States has a developed fishing industry, advanced fishing and aquaculture technology, and its seafood products have a high reputation in the international market.

Europe:

• Norway: It is the main source of Chinese salmon imports. Its north has an ideal environment for Atlantic salmon growth, and the quality of salmon produced is excellent. Norway's export of farmed fresh salmon to China is widely popular in the market.

• Russia: It borders China and has abundant fishery resources in its Far Eastern waters. China mainly imports seafood products such as fish crabs, cod, and king crabs from Russia. The Russian king crab has a huge body size and delicious meat, and is highly popular in the Chinese market.

Oceania:

• Australia: The country's high-quality seafood such as lobster and abalone, especially rock lobster, occupies a certain market share in China. However, due to quarantine procedures and other issues, Australian lobster exports to China have been somewhat affected, but some seafood products still enter the Chinese market.

• New Zealand: The seafood exported to China mainly includes rock lobster and other seafood. The rock lobster has tender meat and rich taste, which is loved by Chinese consumers.

Asia:

• Indonesia: Rich in marine resources, the seafood products exported to China mainly include shrimp, crabs, etc. In recent years, Indonesia has actively expanded its market in China, and the export volume of seafood has gradually increased.

• Vietnam:  Vietnam exports seafood products such as basa catfish fillet to China, but its lobster exports have declined due to issues such as some farmers violating China's animal protection laws by catching wild lobsters.
