China's tuna exports are strong, with export volume soaring by 133%!

According to the latest statistics released by the General Administration of Customs, China's tuna import and export trade continued to grow in July 2024.

Although the growth rate of imports has slowed down, the performance of exports has been very strong and the growth rate has expanded significantly.

Import growth slowed down

China's tuna imports reached 11,100 tons in July, with a total import value of RMB 143 million.

Although the import volume increased by 69% over the same period last year, the import value only increased by 10%.

Compared with the previous month, both the import volume and value in July decreased, down 10% and 5% respectively.

From January to July 2024, China imported a total of 68,200 tons of tuna, a year-on-year increase of 156%; the total import value reached RMB 880 million, a year-on-year increase of 33%.

Export growth expanded significantly

China's tuna exports performed very strongly in July, with an export volume of 31,200 tons, a significant increase of 133% year-on-year, and a total export value of RMB 1.017 billion, a year-on-year increase of 69%.

July's export volume and export value also increased by 10% and 5% month-on-month compared with June.

In the first seven months of this year, China's tuna exports maintained a steady growth every month, with a cumulative export volume of 160,000 tons and a total export revenue of RMB 5.618 billion.

Compared with the same period last year, the export volume increased by 75% and the export revenue increased by 52%.

In 2022, China accounted for 7% of the global tuna product export market, Thailand dominated with a share of 29%, and Ecuador ranked second with a share of 15%.

Thailand and Spain are the main markets for China's tuna exports, of which 25% of the total exports are sold to Thailand and 17% to Spain.

China’s canned tuna exports are on an upward trend, reaching 139,100 metric tons in 2023, up from 130,300 tons in 2022 and 135,300 tons in 2021. In the first half of this year alone, exports increased 70% year-on-year to 90,500 tons.
