In the 36th week of 2024 (September 2-8), wholesale salmon prices in China experienced the largest weekly increase since the beginning of the year.

The price of Norwegian salmon (6-7 kilograms in size) with head and viscera removed in first tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou has increased by more than 30 yuan per kilogram, reaching 120 yuan per kilogram (about 16.9 US dollars), with a weekly increase of up to 30%.

In addition to Norwegian salmon, prices of salmon from Chile, the Faroe Islands, and Australia have also seen significant increases, with prices for multiple specifications generally rising. According to industry insiders, this round of price increases is the most severe one this year.

A salmon dealer in Guangzhou said on September 2nd, "Last weekend's price surge exceeded everyone's expectations. We expect to make a profit of 15 to 25 yuan per kilogram, which may be the most profitable week of the year.

One of the main reasons for the current price increase is the market's expectation of a decrease in demand for students returning to school in September, resulting in a decrease in order volume. However, Norway has cancelled up to one-third of its salmon shipments, resulting in a sharp decrease in domestic supply and pushing up prices.
