Recently,  a supermarket's sale of "Indian shrimp" has sparked heated discussions in the Chinese community

Many netizens posted on social media that the shrimp they bought at supermarkets in Toronto are all from India.

For consumers in the United States and Canada, many shrimp on the market are produced in India, while the local shrimp industry faces labor and environmental issues.

In addition, according to the English media Globe and Mail, India is Canada's largest source of shrimp imports. In 2023, over one-third of Canada's imported shrimp came from India, valued at over $250 million.

As of 2021, India has exported shrimp worth over 5 billion to the world, accounting for nearly a quarter of global shrimp exports. Meanwhile, India is also the largest supplier of shrimp to the United States, accounting for approximately 40% of the country's shrimp consumption.
